Ima-yo was a popular game and song of the Heian Period, in which players and singers tried to out do each other by subsitutting rhyme schemes and number strings as they performed. The cloistered Emperor Go Shirikawa was so absorbed with playing that he hurt his throat doing it.He left a book,still in use today, of a compilation of songs, Ryujin Hisho (Song to make the Throat Dance)
