Hokkei Biography

Ukiyo-e painter, printmaker. Lived in Edo. Originally a fishmonger (hence name of Totoya). First studied painting  
under Kano Yosen'in; later a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, becoming one of his best followers. Produced only a few single-sheet prints, but many illustrations for collections of satirical poems and, especially, siirimono of fine design and excellent printing. His work rivals that of his master.
