Toyokuni I, Memorial Print for the actor Onoe Matsusuke I at age 71 (1744 – 1815)
Bats appear frequently in Japanese design motifs, and they have a special significance. For this death/momorial print, I found this appropriate quote from Fennelosa:
"...The soul which dwells in agony
Flies about like a bat under the moon.
The poor bewildered ghost that has lost its body
Whistles in the autumn wind."
